Context

The development of Coastal Expression is the culmination of many conversations with pioneers and missional leaders over 4-5 years. We are currently a couple of years into the Coastal Expression experiment under the auspices of Urban Expression. We have recognised an increasing missional imperative to meaningfully re-engage coastal communities with the gospel and the Kingdom of God. Often overlooked in favour of urbanised settings, the U.K.’s coastal communities are amongst the most challenging and socially deprived in Europe. Some, seaside towns do a good job of hiding this deprivation behind a seasonal holiday culture but the indigenous populations which still live in and near coastal towns face extreme hardship, abysmal public services and a dislocated transport system which isolates and traps local people limiting their options for work, education and health care.

The very specific nature of the culture of coastal communities requires a unique approach when it comes to engaging with their indigenous populations, supporting and developing pioneers in these settings, and strategically learning from each other. This is the primary aim of Coastal Expression.
